Huntington Family Center Issues Statement on George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmed Aubrey’s Death

WE, at Huntington Family Centers, condemn the recent deplorable racist actions that have afflicted this Nation.

MANY have gathered in our communities to speak out, grieve, and protest. We have seen some of these occurrences escalate. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “a riot is the language of the unheard.” While he responded through non-violent protest, he understood the pain and anguish felt by many of the damage centuries of injustice, discrimination, and oppression causes and the ripples of such raw pain.

IN the middle of a public health pandemic, we have been reminded of the disparities in communities of color. Here in our city, the crushing effects of racism are apparent in the poverty rates, crime rates, unemployment rates, and lack of educational opportunities. In our country, too many institutions, policies, and practices promote and condone a racial divide.

HUNTINGTON FAMILY CENTERS continues to offer programs and services to break down barriers for our neighborhood residents.

WE are a safe space for our community built on the rich diversity that makes up the City of Syracuse.

WE are dedicated to ensuring equality and opportunity for the next generation.

WE all need to do more to end this injustice. We need everyone: our colleagues, neighbors, family, and friends to listen, to educate, to recognize, and to demand justice. Together, we can work to tear down the systems that suppress and divide.

Syracuse Community Center Collaborative Issues Statement on George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery's Death

The Syracuse Community Center Collaborative, a partnership between Huntington Family Centers, Syracuse Community Connections, Syracuse Northeast Community Center, and Westcott Community Center, condemns the recent deplorable racist actions that have afflicted this nation.

Many have gathered in our communities to speak out, grieve, and protest. We have seen some of these occurrences escalate. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “a riot is the language of the unheard.” While he responded through non-violent protest, he understood the pain and anguish felt by many. He understood the damage centuries of injustice, discrimination, and oppression causes and the ripples of such raw pain.

Here in our city, the crushing effects of racism are apparent in the poverty, crime, unemployment rates as well as the lack of educational opportunities. In our country, too many institutions, policies, and practices promote and condone a racial divide.

As a Collaborative, we developed our Supported Employment Program, to break down barriers supporting equal employment opportunities. Our after-school programs celebrate the advancement and dreams of our children, connecting and celebrating their cultures. And, our emergency services provide diapers, clothing, and food to support neighbors rising out of poverty. Many of our participants are dedicated to ensuring equality and opportunity for the next generation, returning to participate and lead our countless programs and services. Our centers are built on the rich diversity of the City of Syracuse.

We need to do more to end this injustice. We need our colleagues, neighbors, family, and friends to listen, to educate, to recognize, and to demand justice. Together, we can work to remove the systems that suppress and divide.

We acknowledge what has happened and stand in solidarity with those who peaceably march for change.
